In the pursue of my career
Tuesday, March 03, 2009
I am twenty-three year old student, devoted and determined to attend school
and learn more about medicine. To become a registered nurse and eventually a
nurse anesthetist is something I have wanted to do, ever since I can
remember. Luckily, I was blessed with a job as a medical receptionist in an
out-patient surgical center, where I was inspired and became very interested
in the medical field. As a medical receptionist, I learned the
responsibility nurses and doctors take to take care of patients, and the
devotion they have for their job as medical professionals. I was able to
view the pressure and issues that came along with the job. As I focused on
the excitement and commitment to make patients feel better, I realized that
this was something I definitely needed to do. Also, as I felt obligated, to
learn a few things in that field, when my son was born as a premature baby,
and is now legally blind with a condition called retinopathy of prematurity.
These are some of the few things that have inspired me to pursue my
education.
I am the first in my family to graduate high school and attend college. My
parents have taught me the importance of maintaining a job, and how
important it is to be dedicated to it. In my first year of college I was
able to enroll myself in the honors program known as Phi Theta Kappa. I am
aware, of it not being easy, such as Peggy Anderson, wrote in her book
“Nurse”, a true story about an RN, and her real nurse life story in a
large urban hospital. She mentions the joy of helping patients and the
relationships that are sometimes formed, but as she exclaims, “Sometimes I
help people live, sometimes I help them die, always, I help them. I’m a
nurse.” With a good deal of work come bigger rewards. It has also been
known that this career is in big demand right now, due to the baby boom
coming into effect.
Since I recently move to Florida, with my husband who decided to join the
US Coast Guard, last fall, I have had to face a couple of issues. First
coming up with a way to pay for my out-of state student tuition, for this
year’s semesters. While we’ve had to adjust to the military life, I have
not yet to obtain a job. And with my husband being the only head of
household, it leaves us with no money to pay for my school. We have tried
several other avenues, but due to our credit scores we would not qualify. I
consider myself devoted and determined and posses the ability to learn about
medicine, and how to take care of people.
