Help me to become a nurse

I am applying for the Campus RN Scholarship. Currently, I am in senior and
accepted by UNM College of nursing program for summer 2008 term and
expecting to be graduated in Aug 2009. I am sure of my desire is to help
others and throughout this professional education will encourage my life
goal to become realized. I think that education plays a significant role in
my life and it has been an important aspect of my life. Moreover, I believed
that other activities included volunteer experiences and participation to
social activities can expand my knowledge so I am involved with church
choir, volunteered at local hospital, and had been worked at hospital as a
nurse’s aid.
As I mention that my life desire is to help others since I was in high
school. So after my high school graduation, I began to experience at the
hospital environment by getting involved with volunteering and worked as a
nurse’s aid. I got a nurse’s aid certification immediately after I
graduated from high school in South Korea.
The first place of my hospital experience was the “Surgery Room” and
the “Central Supply Department” where we sterilized medical equipments.
The first experience with my certification was not with real hospitalized
patients. However, I thought that experience was very important and led me
to develop my future dream. I learned about surgical procedures, the ways of
sterilizing medical equipment, and the operating system of a hospital. From
one year of activities in the “Surgery Room” and “Central Supply
Department,” I felt more passionate about becoming a nurse and wanted to
be more professional.
After one year of hospital experience, I came to the United States with my
family. In 2005, I began to study at UNM and decided to apply to the nursing
program to become a professional nurse. However as other immigrants, I
experienced many toils such as adjusting to a different culture and
language. So I hesitated to become a professional nurse during my first year
of college. I studied piano and voice at the music department during
freshman year. However, it became clear I could not give up my true dream of
becoming a professional nurse. So in my second year, once again I decided to
apply to the nursing program and took the pre-requirements. One of the basic
classes that encouraged me to apply to the nursing program was the Nursing
Seminar. Because I could see helping people is not different in the United
States from the South Korea. I could also explore different parts and places
around local hospitals during the field trips. At the same time I was
volunteering at local hospital and enjoyed.
Based on these experiences, high quality education will help me to become
professional nurse. An ICU practitioner nurse is my largest life goal. And
to become an ICU practitioner nurse, this UNM nursing program is first step
of my future dream. I hope this scholarship opportunity can lead me to
continue my education and one day I would like to give back to other student
as a professional nurse at the teaching hospital.
